Hello there friends... I am finally writing to you about the field trip this weekend. We are going rockhounding Sunday April 21st: the focus is fossils. We'll meet at the same place as usual... the Canadian Tire parking lot at 9:00 a.m. For those of you that live closer to Hamm Rd, or are from down south you can meet us at the Hamm Road intersection with the new highway at 9:30-ish.
We are hunting for fossils in the shale. I have not personally collected at this location but rumour has it that fossils have been found here. If we decide that this location is not very productive, we'll go farther south to spots that I do know well. Stokum Falls is a good spot but you need good waterproof gumboots. Alternately - if you're feeling brave - you could wear shorts or roll up your pants and take your shoes off. The water is fast moving but very shallow as it spreads out on the shale. I have found very good fossils there.
Bring all the usual stuff, Good footwear, rain stuff, sun hat, rock pick, hammer and pick, pry bar, some thing to carry your treasures, etc. Also remember something to eat and drink. Helmet is your call, there are spots with high rock walls.
